Under-Served Markets: Retail and Regeneration
In late October 2007 the Business in the Community Under-Served Markets project Guide to Retail and Regeneration was launched by Local Government minister John Healey. The publication is intended as a how-to guide for practitioners, the aim being to showcase the practical guidance developed through the project to a wider audience. An appendix to the guide looks at relevant research.
The launch is being followed by a series of workshops promoted by Business in the Community in collaboration with the Regional Government Offices, which will be of particular interest to both public and private sector planning practitioners, landowners, developers, retailers and their consultants.
The three main themes of each workshop, reflecting the Guide, are:
- How retail investment in deprived areas can be encouraged.
- How the planning system can be used to plan for and facilitate such investment
- How the positive benefits of such investment – employment, business support and community regeneration – can be maximised for local stakeholders.
Presentations, transcripts and agendas from the workshops held in Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham and London can be viewed and downloaded as pdf files below (some files are large).
Presentations from a September 2008 workshop in London looking at the impact of proposed changes to PPS6 can also be viewed, along with the Under-served Markets project's response to the consultation on the changes.
Update January 2009 - research commissioned by Business in the Community and BCSC examines five retail-led regeneration case studies, gauging how each has transformed the local community and highlighting good practice.
